The amount of water that collected inside the Barnett Bank building on NW 13th Street easily broke the rainfall totals at the Gainesville Regional Airport on Saturday.
While one-tenth of an inch of rain fell at the airport, a broken water filtration system dumped more than five inches of water inside parts of the building at 2815 NW 13th St.
Throughout the morning, representatives from businesses damaged by the flood and Gainesville firefighters worked to assess and clean up the expensive mess, totaling more than $100,000 in damage.
Offices for MetLife and Florida Gas Utility, where the flood started on the building's second floor, also were damaged, said Stuart Schwartz of Gainesville Fire Rescue.
The businesses all expected to open on time Monday.
A line, no bigger than a pencil apparently broke in the water filtration system under a sink in the Florida Gas Utility office, said GFR Acting Lt. Steve Mueller. For about 12 hours, water leaked from the line and worked through the building's conduits, dripping down onto offices on the first floor.
